Established in 1985, Philip J Milton & Company Plc is proud to be one of the largest and most successful Independent Wealth Managers in the area. Having celebrated our thirtieth anniversary in August last year, we bought much larger premises, Choweree House, moving in January 2016 in anticipation of a new phase of growth and expansion for the Company.

The Company is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). We are regulated at one of the highest available categories, being one of very few firms authorised to undertake discretionary investment management and to hold client money.
The firm was established in 1985 by Philip Milton who left a successful banking career in the summer of that year to work from home. Indeed, some of our existing clients have been with the Firm since those early days and recall meeting with Philip around his parents’ dining table! Having experienced the commercialised and somewhat impersonal nature of retail banking, Philip had noted that the availability of independent and personalised financial advice was lacking in North Devon but felt strongly that this was the way such business ought to be conducted. Despite a little apprehension on the first day, for Philip, setting up on his own was a risk worth taking. Looking back thirty years on, it can certainly be seen to have been the right decision for him and his clients and staff.
The Company bought its Joy Street premises in 1991 (where it remained for twenty-four years) and was incorporated as a public limited company in 1996 with share capital of £1million. In 2015 the Company celebrated its thirtieth anniversary and marked the next chapter with a move to much larger premises in Boutport Street, Barnstaple. Since 1985, staff numbers have grown steadily and sustainably by around 9% each year, and the new premises allows scope for further expansion of the workforce, one it has trained professionally and in its business style and ethics and with many individuals with the Firm since their earliest days of work.
For Philip Milton, the key to the Company’s success is that from its inception, the focus has always been the importance of its relationship with its clients founded upon the principles of integrity, honesty and trust:

As well as boasting a wealth of experience spanning over three decades, our team holds some of the highest financial services qualifications in the country. Both Philip Milton and director Mark Millichope hold Certified Financial Planner status, (we were one of the first Companies in the country to have two advisers with this qualification and the first in North Devon) and director Scott Pickard holds the Chartered Financial Adviser qualification, the highest level of qualification available in the financial services industry.
In 2015, Philip J Milton & Company Plc was voted as one of the Top 100 Financial Advisers in the country by leading financial publication ‘New Model Adviser’, an accolade that takes into account profitability, qualifications, assets under advice, recurring income and overall commitment to the profession. In 2016, the independently conducted Plimsoll report also ranked Philip J Milton & Company Plc as the 21st most profitable and 213th most valuable financial advisory firm in the country (of 1,450 firms analysed) and gave us a rating of “strong”. Indeed, the Company’s profits have been consistent and reinvested significantly back into the business to provide more strength and dependability, including the purchase of its premises, and clients’ funds under its discretionary management now exceed £110million (as at May 2016)
Whilst we are more interested in looking at ways to improve than “blowing our own trumpet”, these results inevitably contribute to a confidence and peace of mind for staff and clients alike that cannot be substituted, an invaluable asset as we look to our fourth decade in business and beyond!
